Vignettes Lorgnettes is a new printing of J. Dubuffet’s Ler dla Canpane. The calligraphic text and seven original engravings are republished, enriched by seventeen others. The phonetic transcription of the text does not make it easy to understand, but it does restore the liveliness and immediacy of the language. The black-and-white engravings are densely hatched, with abstract shapes superimposed on figures and silhouettes. In keeping with the rejection of cultural values that characterizes the artist’s work, this book is the exact opposite of illustrated books.

About the author

Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985)

Jean Dubuffet developed a singular body of work in the wake of Dada, based on the rejection of cultural values that he saw as an obstacle to pure artistic creation. In 1945, he coined the concept of Art Brut, which brings together artistic expressions free of all cultural influences. His entire approach is part of the same quest for a creative experience that goes against the grain of prevailing practices.
