In Femme à robe rouge, probably by Françoise Gilot, Picasso reverts to a language of simple geometrical forms, underlined by a black brush line. The marked verticality of the figure’s long neck, redoubled by the canvas’s format, is counterbalanced by the horizontality of the head, dominating the whole, and the shoulders.
