"In summer, the hinterland is white, drenched in sunshine, and the deep blue sea merges with the sky" (1).

From this description of the summer Midi, it's immediately clear that this painting depicts a scene of intense heat. As if bleached by the sun, the olive trees are white, as are the earth and stones. The mountain in the distance appears to be covered by a veil that prevents the observer from discerning any relief.
