Portrait of Claude D., as well as his two other parents (D.583 and D.584), were executed by Matisse for the frontispiece of the collection of poems written by Tristan Tzara during the war, Le Signe de vie, published by Pierre Bordas in 1946. Six drawings by Matisse accompany the poems. This Portrait de Claude D. is also Matisse's contribution to the portefolio published by Fernand Mourlot in 1952 to mark the centenary of his activity.
