According to Paul Jenkins himself, this title, alone or followed by a phrase or key words, illustrates: “the capture of reality in its perpetual metamorphoses, both the act of painting and its final result”.
Paper thus becomes a space for redefining color, light and space. The act of painting becomes a subject in itself: “Color is a sensation, not an external manifestation of nature”. This is why a poetic form emerges from this vibrant composition, where paint flows, bleeds and accumulates.
About the author
Paul Jenkins (1923-2012)
An American painter living between New York and Paris, Paul Jenkins’ research is deeply focused on color. Painting as colored matter is the subject of his work, nourished by the scientific theories of Goethe and Newton. He regularly renews his practice by devising new ways of showing the properties of color, sometimes fluid, sometimes transparent, sometimes opaque.
