In 1975, Jean Dubuffet began the "Théâtres de mémoire" series, composed of elements painted in isolation, foreign to one another, then cut out, juxtaposed and superimposed. The silkscreens in the "Faits mémorables" suite are the result of technical mastery and time-consuming work: each plate required sixty-two passes. Energetic assemblages of small and large figures and abstractions, the compositions have no clear narrative or point of departure. They transcribe the movement of memory as it tries to recall and the anarchic surge of recollections.
