Although Bernard Buffet spent most of his time in Paris, he drew his inspiration from the sunny landscapes and unique atmosphere of Saint-Tropez. The Buffet family, led by Annabel, vacationed in an apartment high above the town. This location offers a bird’s-eye view that Bernard Buffet never fails to capture. This work is an enhanced model for the lithograph L’ Église et la baie(The Church and the Bay), a black lithograph proof enhanced with mixed media (pencil, watercolor, gouache and India ink). The colors are brighter than on the original lithograph, the roofs redder, the blue deeper and the green shinier.

About the author

Bernard Buffet (1928-1999)

Bernard Buffet developed a figurative expressionist style in a post-war period dominated by abstraction. He developed an eminently graphic aesthetic characterized by strong black lines and angular drawing. The network of crosshatching, also present on the backgrounds of his compositions, provides a plastic link between the various elements of the image.
