Rouault, Georges, Grotesques, c. 1930

This aquatint is part of a suite printed for an album project commissioned by Vollard in 1926, Grotesques. This plate was not included in the final lithographed album. Nevertheless, it already reveals the vein of political satire present in the final version, as well as in the Réincarnations du Père Ubu. The character, engrossed in his large green jacket, seems a tad clumsy with his heavy, drooping hands.
