Picasso, Pablo, Large Woman’s Head with Ornamented Hat, 1962

Each time he tried a new technique, Picasso demonstrated particularly rewarding innovations. In Grande tête de femme au chapeau orné, the fine parallel stripes in ochre-pink that create a sense of material, akin to marquetry, result from the artist’s use of a horse currycomb, like a scraper.
