Matisse, Henri, Album Jazz, Plate XX, 1947

Le Toboggan de Jazz was originally composed by Matisse in 1937-1938 as part of his studies for the curtain of Léonide Massine’s ballet L’Étrange Farandole. He took it up again and reworked it in June 1943 for the album Jazz. The figure comes directly from Matisse’s work for La Danse at the Barnes Foundation (Merion, Pennsylvania).
