The Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres is home to the famous porcelain workshops and the museum, which exhibits ceramics from all over the world and from every era. Founded in the 18th century, it also invites many artists to produce works in porcelain thanks to the company’s know-how.
This led Olivier Debré to create decorations for a dinner service in 1992. Then, between 1995 and 1996, he painted twenty unique original pieces on Sèvres porcelain vases, of which this work is one.
About the author
Olivier Debré (1920-1999)
A major French painter on the art scene in the second half of the 20th century, Olivier Debré’s monumental, colorful, non-figurative work is an exact reflection of the way we experience reality. His vast canvases, composed of large swathes of fluid color, bring him closer to the “color-field painting” of American abstract expressionists such as Morris Louis and Clifford Still. His black-and-white etchings retain a very painterly feel.
