Haas, Michel, La Victoire, 1989
1989
Mixed media on paper
137 x 90 cm
Signed by the artist in white, lower center
The silhouette of a man, fist raised, appears slightly raised on the paper, as if emerging from the earth. This figure in action, recurrent in the artist’s work, echoes in its material and clay color a founding episode for Michel Haas. When he saw a field of earth turned upside down, he realized that the strength and depth of the elements were not cultivated on the surface but beneath the material, something he sought to realize in his subsequent work.
