“When I paint a tree or a man, I believe in it so much that in my eyes it becomes reality. At the same time, since I’m not completely naive, I know it’s painting. So I keep swinging back and forth between “it’s true” when I’m doing it and “it’s only paint” when I step back to look at what I’ve done. This ambiguity is always there, and I believe that the presence in my paintings is born of this sensation.
