This original lithograph shows the Domaine de la Baume, acquired by Bernard Buffet in 1986 in the Haut-Var region of France, which became the artist’s privileged refuge during the last period of his life. This family home, the subject of many of Buffet’s compositions from every angle, provided him with the inspiration and serenity he sought. For this composition, the artist chose a lateral perspective, offering a view of the banister and the railing. The cypress trees in the foreground remind us that we are in Provence. The colors used in the lithograph reflect Bernard Buffet’s distinctive palette. The dark green of the trees and bushes completes the palette, reinforcing the sense of calm.

Bernard Buffet élabore une œuvre figurative expressionniste dans cette période de l’après-guerre dominée par l’abstraction. Il met en place une esthétique éminemment graphique caractérisée par des lignées noires très appuyées et un dessin anguleux. Le réseau de hachures, également présent sur les fonds de ses compositions, assure le rôle plastique de lien entre les différents éléments de l’image.
