Baigneuses à “Tahiti“, an original lithograph by Bernard Buffet, features the vivid colors typical of the artist’s work. The scene evokes the bright Mediterranean sunlight with the presence of a vacationing couple, perhaps a self-portrait with Annabel. The woman, lying on her back with her hands covering her eyes to protect herself from the sun, and the man, casually lying on his stomach, embody the calm and relaxation of a day at the beach.
About the author
Bernard Buffet (1928-1999)
Bernard Buffet developed a figurative expressionist style in a post-war period dominated by abstraction. He developed an eminently graphic aesthetic characterized by strong black lines and angular drawing. The network of crosshatching, also present on the backgrounds of his compositions, provides a plastic link between the various elements of the image.
