Matisse's first lithographs date from 1906. He also produced lithographs in 1907, 1913 and one in 1916/1917. He returned to this technique in 1922, with Le Repos du modèle (D. 416), commissioned by publisher Edmond Frapier. In the contrasting odalisque style characteristic of Matissian aesthetics in the 1920s, Le Repos du modèle ushered in a flowering of lithographs, including Jeune fille aux boucles brunes after Henriette Darricarrère, the artist's favorite model from 1920 to 1927.
